INTERNATIONAL BIOETHICS COMMITTEE

AGENDA ITEM I : ETHICS OF MEDICAL RESEARCH TESTS

AGENDA ITEM II : REGULATIONS ON GENOME ENGINEERING

The International Bioethics Committee (IBC) is a body of 36 independent experts that follows progress in the life sciences and its applications to ensure respect for human dignity and freedom. It was created in 1993. The committee has two agenda items which are the ethics of medical research tests and regulations on genome engineering. In the context of medical research, the IBC struggles with striking a delicate balance between technological advancement and the moral requirement to protect research subjects’ rights, dignity, and wellbeing. Aiming to find solutions that guarantee the greatest standards of informed consent, privacy, and fair treatment in clinical trials and medical experimentation, delegates in the IBC engage in thought-provoking conversations. Additionally, in this conference the IBC tackles the burgeoning field of genome engineering, a frontier where the potential for transformative advancements coexists with profound ethical
concerns. Delegates within this committee are tasked with crafting regulations that strike the right balance between promoting innovation and preventing misuse or harm, addressing issues such as the alteration of human germline cells and the equitable distribution of gene-editing technologies.
